Child of Hope: Farming for the future

[Online PR for slum charity Child of Hope]

A plot of land behind the school has been converted for an ongoing project that will train our pupils in growing certain vegetables, such as potatoes, peas, beans, cabbage, egg plants and tomatoes.

Now, thanks to a generous donation, the children will try various techniques to see which produces the best harvest and then roll up their sleeves to get muddy! They’ll learn which plants help the land and give nutrition back to the soil, how to prevent free-roaming animals spoiling the crops and the problems of waste management (plastics, etc). As a bonus, hopefully the children will be able to eat the end product!

The foundation to this is that we want our children to understand their important role in looking after God’s creation – to grow up knowing that their environment must be cared for and to give them the skills to do so. In addition Uganda has a long tradition in agriculture/farming and many people in Uganda have a small plot ‘back in their village home’ where they grow crops to make money in addition to their ‘normal’ employment. We realised that this was something our ‘slum-dwelling’ children were missing out on.

Not bad, cod do better…

It may not have been the best fishing ever (let’s blame the wind and tides…), but a great fun day in glorious sunshine! The event was Groveley’s annual staff fishing competition around Poole Bay and harbour, on board charter fishing boat Rocket.

The winner was guest Martin Small, MD of Small Engineering of Wimborne, who landed six different species.

The all-day, bait-supplied species competition was sponsored by Dorset-based engineering tooling company Trucut Tools… who’s Eddie Taylor joined in the fishing and presented the trophy.

New: free networking event in Basingstoke

A new, free business networking event has launched in Basingstoke - and held at our premises in Houndmills.

Organised by our facility manager Kevin Chandler, the event takes place on the second Wednesday of each month at 8–10am. We will provide free refreshments – tea/coffee, fruit juice and a selection of pastries.

It’s an informal meeting with no restrictions on how many businesses from each trade sector can attend. The first meeting in August had guests from sales, HR, event organisation and business consultancy sectors.

Each guest needs to bring along their business cards to share around. One lucky guest will also win a bottle of wine.

Kevin previously ran a similar event in Bracknell, which started small and rose to an average 20 guests each month, which is a similar size we are aiming for in Basingstoke.

For more information on upcoming events or to book your place at the next breakfast on September 7, either email Kevin or call him on (01256) 444455.

Child of Hope: Going strong and vocational

[Online PR for slum charity Child of Hope]

We’re very pleased with the way our new vocational programme is going – it’s helping our less-academic kids gain some very useful skills that let them their sights on future jobs.

We’re not talking about ‘slow learners’ who just need an extra ten minutes of teacher’s time every now and then – these are children with significant learning difficulties. In the UK they would probably be sent to a special needs-type school.

They see their classmates shooting ahead and they find themselves left behind, feeling confused, isolated and losing hope for their future. It becomes difficult for the teacher too, seeing a kid getting demoralised and then watching that turn to boredom, distraction and then trouble-making.

So at the beginning of this year, a new vocational/life skills group was formed within Child of Hope school. Alongside our staff, Emma Stewart (UK volunteer teaching advisor) formed a new style of syllabus for these children which focuses on the simple basics of reading, writing and maths.  During the morning hours, 12 children work around a big table with teacher Juliet, going over such things as phonics training and simple number recognitions.  Juliet does her best to make it fun and interesting while taking it at a very slow pace.

During the afternoons, lessons get really interesting! We’ve employed community members who come in and teach vocational skills. Mr Mayeku works with some of the children on carpentry and they’ve made simple money boxes, stools, folding chairs and free-standing shelves for the library.  Sarah comes in and spends time with the children showing them tailoring skills. They all have a go and have made simple cushions and bags together.

Julia comes in and works with the children on jewellery-making. The kids have had great fun thinking up new designs and carefully, painstakingly threading beads to make colourful necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Their first batch were swiftly snapped up by our female staff members who were happy to pay for their new accessories – the profits from which go towards more materials for the vocational programme.

The change in the children is starting to show… they have greater enthusiasm for coming to school, they’re proud to be a part of a new pioneering group (they’ve nicknamed themselves ‘P8’ as normal primary school finishes at ‘P7’!) and they’re seeing that they can be good at something. In fact, it’s so popular that some of the more academic children have been asking to join the group!

It is still in its early stages and we are keeping a careful eye on its progress, but we’re pleased that analysis shows the children are doing well. We have plans to bring in other vocational skills later in the year and we are excited to see what the future holds for these children.

Dan completes apprenticeship

Child of Hope: Roll up, roll up

[Online PR for slum charity Child of Hope]

A trade show turned up at the football stadium in Mbale, complete with a display by Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (the zoo in Entebbe), showing various animals (ostrich, lion, leopard, monkey, etc) – and we took our our older children (P4, 5, and 6) along to see it.

It was all a completely new experience for them and they had a great time… there was a talk from one of the zoo keepers… they had their faces painted… and had a ride on the, erm, swing thingy.

Groveley Precision Engineering: First class and 3D engineering

[Photography and online PR for Groveley Precision Engineering]
Groveley team leader Alistair Wood has qualified from Bournemouth University with a First Class degree in Engineering.

His project during the degree was to consider how different materials and printing parameters affect the reinforced strength of printed plastic – which he is continuing to explore for Groveley to use in 3D printing production of fixture applications.

Alistair studied for his degree with part-time flexible learning and majored on the Manufacturing Management pathway.

At the same time, he took part in an in-house Project Management training scheme with four more of our staff and achieved Prince2 qualifications.
Alistair is now looking at various options for his Masters Degree.

Leave a gift in your will

[Online PR for slum charity Child of Hope]

Child of Hope have become a charity partner of Christian Legacy, a body which helps people understand the value and purpose of leaving a gift to a charity in your will. It produces a free legacy guide, which can be requested online.

Leaving a gift in your will to Child of Hope would help ensure that your beliefs and values are passed to future generations of the people of the Namatala slum through the work that we do. And it could help us change lives there, long into the future.

If you are considering leaving a gift to Child of Hope in your will, it’s very easy to do. Simply give your solicitor our name, address and charity number, and the amount of the gift or the proportion of your estate you’d like to leave. He will do the rest.

For this purpose, our details are: Child of Hope, 7 Milborne Crescent, Parkstone, Poole, BH12 4ES. Charity number 1136068

Store & Secure: Helping Amelia’s Rainbow to shine

[Photography and online PR for Store & Secure self storage]

We love helping local charities and when Amelia’s Rainbow approached us for a discounted storage room, we liked its work with children so much that we were only too pleased to help.

The charity uses the room to store equipment and resources, and when staff need overflow space for donated items for specific events, we loan them an extra room for a few weeks at a time.

The charity is terrific… it supports children in Dorset and the surrounding area who are suffering from terminal, life-limiting and serious chronic illnesses. By providing funds for activities and play which will enrich the lives of children who are suffering, it creates an environment full of fun, laughter, achievement and memories.

It will fund holidays, family days out, games or toys, social activities such as swimming or dancing lessons or any other request which supports the aim of the charity.

It also has a holiday home in New Milton and a beach hut in Southbourne, fully kitted-out for the benefit of sick children and their families. These are offered to families in Dorset whose children are suffering from chronic, life-limiting and terminal illnesses.

Groveley Precision Engineering: safe, not explosive

As a manufacturer of equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, Groveley Precision Engineering complies fully with Directive 2014/34/EU (formerly ATEX) regulations.

The directive applies to all equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres, whether electrical or mechanical, and also to protective systems.

As a result, anything we manufacture for such an environment must meet essential quality requirements and undergo appropriate conformity procedures. This involves testing and certification by a third-party certification body for the equipment to be marked by the 'EX' symbol.

Certification ensures that the equipment or protective system does not cause an explosion and that adequate information is supplied to ensure that it can be used safely.

Child of Hope: Keeping the children safe

[Online PR for slum charity Child of Hope]

Over the last few years, we have all seen around the world the type of gruesome and horrific mayhem that acts of terror can cause to cities and communities. In the east of Africa, where Child of Hope works, communities have suffered at the hands of al Shabaab. Just last year 147 young people were killed at Garissa University in Kenya (our neighbouring country).

And now it’s getting closer to home. We received a message from the District Police Commissioner that threats had been received against educational institutions in our area and that all schools should take extra precautions to keep children and staff safe.

With this in mind, we have erected a chain link fence with barbed wire on top around the whole of the school compound. We have also erected two gates… one for deliveries of firewood, etc and one being the main entrance for children, staff and visitors. Our two security guards – on duty 24/7 – have been trained to politely but carefully check every visitor before they enter the premises.

It is sad that we have had to do this, but unfortunately it is a sign of the times and we must do our very best to keep our children alive and well.
But on the plus side, it does mean that we have a smart new gate which includes a small room from which we can sell snacks, etc to the children and local community… all proceeds going towards furthering our programmes.

Groveley Precision Engineering: Great response at Farnborough

Back from Farnborough, we’re following up an excellent mix of enquiries from potential new customers, suppliers and recruits.

We were showing our capabilities in suppling precision-engineered components for the aerospace industry… using 3D modelling/machining for turning, milling, and finishing an extensive array of metals, plastics and friction materials.

At the close of the Farnborough International Airshow 5-day trade exhibition, organisers confirmed that the show had recorded orders and options to the value of US$123.9 billion, defying industry expectations.

Despite adverse weather drawing business to an early close on Monday, the trade show halls remained busy throughout the week. Visitor numbers from Monday to Thursday averaged at 20,000 per day.

Star of the show on the final day was Tim Peake, who opened proceeding in his first public appearance since returning from the ISS four weeks ago.

The official main opening saw both Prime Minister David Cameron and Richard Branson welcoming senior aerospace executives, military officials and international government representatives at the official opening ceremony – with a fly past by the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter flanked by the Red Arrows.

Graeme’s visit

[Online PR for slum charity Child of Hope]

It was great to have a visit from Graeme Wheeler, who is the uncle of Martin Hayter, our Uganda-based volunteer who heads up our building projects and our Income Generating Activities (IGA) programme.

Graeme travelled from the UK and spent time visiting the school and its local community… seeing first-hand how our services have such a huge impact on the poorest and most vulnerable slum families.

He said: "I've just come to the end of a ten day visit to my nephew Martin at Child of Hope in Mbale. It's a thrilling place to be in as it provides an education for nearly 500 children who wouldn't have received any schooling otherwise. Equally fascinating was going out into the locality and villages to meet the families who benefit from the IGA scheme. A big thank you to all the committed staff who generously gave me their time."
