New video: Child of Hope's amazing school in the slum

[Social media post for slum charity Child of Hope]

Here's a new 5-minute video – the story of how Child of Hope started its life-changing, high-social impact work in the Namatala slum of eastern Uganda. It gives some good views of the Namatala slum where we work, and CoH's response to the terrible poverty and lack of opportunities afforded to children with no education. Well worth a watch.

The new year starts at our slum school

[Social media for slum charity Child of Hope]

At the start of the new school year, here are all the pupils at our school! They are standing in the middle section of the school... clearly showing it needs a good lick of paint following the addition of the third level. It'll have to wait, however, as the official opening of the completed school takes place in September, and it will be painted just before that!

The intake of new nursery children will take place in a couple of months, so currently our numbers remain at 365. They have all moved up a year and the oldest children have entered P7, the last class in the primary school. So now we are exploring how we will be able to help them at the start of 2016... we have lots of ideas, and we'll let you know during the year how things progress.

Blog: Project mis-management.. what really happens

A guide to screwing up projects in the traditional way: ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

It should be simple; agree at the beginning what is required and ascertain that it can be done at an agreed cost and time scale. Then do it and manage the inevitable changes within an agreed set of parameters. But sadly…

Kitchen top with steel

[Social media post for high-end joinery Kirolite]

Kirolite manufactured this kitchen top with seamless bend for offices at Elite Fabrication & Welding at Poole; it featured a smart stainless steel insert on the front edge and splashback – both made by Elite itself.

Elite installed the kitchen as part of a refurbishment to its new premises including offices, entrance and stairway.

The two Dorset companies have a long working relationship of producing high-end products for clients in a mix of stainless steel and wood or solid surfaces.

Furniture and fittings for commercial interiors

[Social media for high-end joinery Kirolite]

Furniture and fittings for commercial interiors in solid surface and wood... for offices, reception areas and boardrooms.

Solid surface fabrications really are the shape of things to come in the commercial sector, because they can be moulded into any shape, size and specification that you wish.

It all means that when it comes to bespoke furniture and fittings in the professional workplace – perhaps mixed beautifully with the warm tones of real wood – expediency and excellence can be paired together.

Helping handicapped and disadvantaged kids in Romania

Staff at Store & Secure self-storage at Castlepoint are helping the Poole branch of a charity that relieves suffering for handicapped and disadvantaged children and families in Romania.

They are supplying free storage to help the Biggin Hill Romania Group (BHRG), which provides aid and relief to the most needy and vulnerable children and families specifically in the area of Comanesti, North East Romania.

It started by relieving the stress of sick/handicapped children in state-run institutions and children's homes, but BHRG later expanded to deliver supplies to hospitals, dental surgeries, schools and churches and now also supports mentally, physically or other disadvantaged children kept at home.

The storage room provided by Store & Secure self-storage allows the charity to store donated items for its annual Christmas shoe box appeal, as well as good quality clothes (particularly children's and baby's clothes), other baby items (pushchairs, cots etc), bedding, toys and bric-a-brac.

Volunteer Lyn Jenkins (left) said: “The storage room is extremely helpful to us – contributors can deliver items direct, with very easy access, and we can work there to sort items and pack for shipping."

The charity sends two large consignments each year by road and often several smaller shipments in between.

It also operates a shop in Romania that sells donated items from the UK – this allows them to sell low-cost items to poorer families while raising funds for its new centre for homeless girls.
