[Social media post for charity Child of Hope]
Erick is one of our many kids to have suffered from jiggers – one of the most debilitating medical conditions in sub-Saharan Africa.
The problem lies with chigoe fleas that burrow into exposed skin on the feet to lay eggs. During that time they swell dramatically, sometimes causing intense irritation. If the flea is left within the skin, dangerous problems can occur including secondary infections, loss of nails, deep holes in the flesh and toe deformation. Not nice.
It prevents millions of children from attending school, stops farmers from working their land, and makes walking all but unbearable. Jiggers entrenches families deeper into poverty – read more about it on Wikipedia.
Erick was missing school a lot, or coming in pain (he loves to study), but was finding it hard to walk from home and concentrate in class due to the itching and pain in his feet. But with help from our health and welfare teams, poor Erick is now relieved of the pain and happy – and doing well in class again.
Would you like to sponsor Erick or one of his classmates? It costs just £15 per month and you’ll get regular letters and photos from him! Click here for details.
