NAMATALA SLUM, UGANDA: It's been another good year for Child of Hope's slum school. All 29 pupils passed their important Primary Leaving Exam, seven in division one and the remaining 22 in division two. They are therefore all eligible to continue their education in our new secondary school in Namabasa, although a handful may opt for the vocation route with the local vocational college.

New tailor now boosting slum family income
NAMATALA SLUM, UGANDA: Child of Hope student Sharon always wanted to be a tailor, so she transferred – after four years of secondary schoo – to the polytechnic school for vocational skills. She has now completed the two-year course in tailoring.
The first in her family to receive any secondary education, Sharon was eager to become self-sufficient and able to contribute to the family’s income.

Child of Hope's nutrition advice for slum parents
NAMATALA SLUM, UGANDA: Following discovery of poor nutrition in some pupils, the school's health department invited a nutritionist to talk with parents of those most affected.
A nutritionist from the Joint Clinical Research Centre in Mbale taught the parents about alternative health foods that would help build their children’s bodies. She encouraged them to feed the children earlier so they would not miss vital meals. The health team assisted the nutritionist by preparing sample foods.
If you would like to help sponsor food and nutritional provision at our school, please click here for information.

New video - a day in Child of Hope's nursery class
NAMATALA SLUM, UGANDA: A new short video of a day in the life of our nursery children - these are the youngest in our slum school in Uganda. It shows a little girl called Favour from the time she walks to school with a couple of friends until going home.
Around 40 children from the Namatala slum join our school each year and the cost for running our school (where everything is free for the kids) is helped enormously when supporters sponsor a child like Favour – who isn’t sponsored yet, by the way!
Could you help us by sponsoring a child through school? It costs just £15 per month. You can write to them if you like and you will receive school reports and letters from the child each year. The main thing is, it will help us give them a serious lift-up from the worst excesses of slum poverty.

JED Art's Italian range; new ceramic additions soon
Jan Dowding's first Italian range pots went down so well that she is now making a new batch. They take two days to make, starting with cutting the shapes, leaving overnight to leather harden; then joining together the body; attaching a neck and carving ’til it is nice and smooth. Each one unique.
